Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) launched the ‘Amplifying Young Women’s Voice for Equality and Non-Discrimination’ initiative in 2020 covering Hwange, Bulawayo and Gwanda.
The campaign focuses on coordinating and facilitating young women’s movement building and galvanizing collective advocacy to respond to new and emerging issues that affect young women and to build their capacity to organize and demand accountability on their social and economic rights. Research conducted by WCoZ in 2020 ascertained that young women continue to be subjected to inequalities and challenges associated with their age and as such, are urgently seeking for political, economic and social change. It was noted that young women’s rights continue being negatively impacted by harmful cultural and religious practices, subordination in the public and private spheres, patriarchal attitudes, lack of skills, and power imbalances in all spheres of life while undermining the young women’s progress in exercising and enjoying their rights.
It is against this background that WCoZ is hosting a hybrid young women’s rally with in the three districts from 20-22 October 2021. Young women will be supported by various stakeholders to organize and mobilize themselves to demand redress and address social,
economic and political challenges from duty bearers. Since the year 2017, WCoZ established the Young Women’s Forums in all the 10 provinces in efforts to create safe convening spaces for young women aged 18 to 35 to meet and collectively discuss issues affecting them in their locality. The Young Women’s Forum advocates for issues that affect young women and their efforts feed into the ten clusters of WCoZ consisting of economic empowerment, peace building, humanitarian, legal and constitution, culture, media and ICT, health, education, environment and gender-based violence clusters.
