This strategy recognizes that Zimbabwe has ratified many regional and international instruments
advancing gender equality and women empowerment and participation in politics and
governance espoused through United Nations (UN), Africa Union (AU) and Southern Africa
Development Community (SADC) Conventions and Protocols 1 . As such, this calls for a strong
women’s movement to mobilize and support women’s full participation in national
development processes as provided for by the Constitution of Zimbabwe, regional and
international instruments promoting women’s rights that Zimbabwe is part of 2 . However, the
Zimbabwean society remains patriarchal and violent thereby constraining the realization of
rights by women and girls as envisioned by the Constitution of Zimbabwe.
